At five institutions across Germany, many scientists from very different disciplines are working on research topics related to geothermal energy.
Karlsruhe Institut für Technologie
The project team at KIT coordinates the GeoLaB project and contributes to geothermal research in GeoLaB with its knowledge from various specialist disciplines.
Deutsches GeoForschungsZentrum
The GFZ specialises in research into the solid Earth. GFZ scientists contribute their knowledge of geosciences and drilling technology to GeoLaB.
Helmholtz-Zentrum für Umweltforschung
The UFZ is developing the ‘Virtual GeoLaB’, a so-called digital twin of the real research laboratory in the virtual world.
Technische Universität Darmstadt
TU Darmstadt contributes regional geoscientific knowledge to the Tromm region. The scientists involved are mainly concerned with the occurrence, movement and quality of groundwater.
Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung
In the GeoLaB project, the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (BGE) wants to learn what challenges need to be overcome in the construction of underground facilities and how modern technical solutions can help.
The BGE's involvement in GeoLaB ends with the commissioning of the research laboratory. No repository will be built at the actual GeoLaB site. The legally regulated selection process for a disposal site will proceed independently of the BGE's basic research with GeoLaB.
